Timber offcuts, tree surgery and waste from the building industry represent a significant part of the material going to landfill. Not only does it occupy land we can ill afford to lose, but the cost of landfill is high for both the bodies generating waste and the local authorities that must process it.

Anaerobic digestion of wood and waste takes place in landfill sites. This process releases the harmful greenhouse gas methane into our  atmosphere. Methane causes more global warming by the greenhouse effect than carbon dioxide.

By recycling waste wood as a fuel source we can make use of the energy contained within it. See the Forestry Commission - Forest Research website for more information on recycling wood.

At Orion Heating we hope to assist wood-burning stove and fireplace owners by listing sources of recyclable waste timber - FREE WOOD. Hopefully, as the list grows you will find sources of waste wood somewhere near you.

Please check the list regularly, and contact your nearest source of recyclable wood waste. Also we request that you only do so when a listing specifically advertises wood as currently available. Orion Heating and the waste wood donors have no knowledge of the suitability of wood on offer for use in stoves or fireplaces. Use of the wood listed here is entirely the responsibility of whoever collects it.
